All about camp

Where it’s held
The camp is located about 45 minutes north of Belleville, about 2.5 hours from Toronto and Ottawa.

Operated by the United Church of Canada, the camp is an accredited member of both the Ontario Camping Association and the Canadian Camping Association.

To learn more about Camp Quin-Mo-Lac, you can check out their website at www.campqml.org.

The Beat Retreat offers a range of programming, allowing you to pick and choose activities based your interests, physical abilities and comfort zone.

We’re still fine-tuning the itinerary for 2011, but here’s a list of some of the things we’ve got planned so far.

  • campfire
  • social hour
  • volleyball game
  • archery
  • ropes course
  • canoeing
  • archery
  • arts and crafts
  • yoga

Trained camp staff will be on hand to supervise certain activities, such as the ropes course and canoeing. Of course, if you choose to relax, read a book, or take a nap that’s fine, too. It’s up to you to decide how much – or how little – you do… as long as you have fun!

Where you’ll sleep
While attending The Beat Retreat, you will be enjoying a true “camp experience.” That means the accommodation will be comfortable, but also a little rustic.

You’ll enjoy the “luxury” of a heated lodge with washrooms, cozy lounging area and a kitchen. But you’ll also:

  • be sharing a room with others, and
  • be sleeping on a bunk.

Linen and pillows are not provided, so be sure to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow.

Remember… we want to give you a taste of camp life. If we wanted five-star luxury, we’d be heading to Le Chateau Montebello… and we’d all be paying a whole lot more than $50.

What to bring
The weather in mid-September can be unpredictable. And different activities call for different apparel. With that in mind, we suggest that you come prepared with the following:

  • sunscreen
  • casual clothes for warm and cool weather
  • extra socks and undergarments
  • sturdy shoes/running shoes
  • rain gear
  • flip flops/sandals
  • toiletries
  • swimming suit (just in case you want to join our annual Polar Bear dip)
  • bath towel and washcloth
  • sleeping bag, pillow and PJ’s
  • water bottle
  • camera
  • plastic bag for dirty / wet clothes
  • insect repellent

And what not to bring…
We are guests at Camp Quin-Mo-Lac. As such, we are required to abide by camp rules. We also need to abide by the terms of our insurance contract. That means absolutely no alcohol or recreational drugs on camp property.

We also suggest that you leave any valuables at home (i.e., ipod, jewelry, etc.)

If you bring a cell phone, we ask that you please turn it off while participating in camp activities, including meals.

Medical care while at camp
While attending The Beat Retreat, you will be responsible for monitoring your own healthcare (i.e., taking medications as prescribed and ensuring your activity level is appropriate based on your medical history and condition). There will be no cardiologist or designated medical personnel on site. The nearest hospital is in Belleville, about 45 minutes away.
