“Dear _______
We are looking for support to make February 14 “Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day”. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the #1 birth defect, affecting an estimated 180,000 Canadians. The number of children now surviving into adulthood is being referred to a “tsunami”, and adequate medical and social resources to support these “survivors” just don’t exist.
Two years ago we were successful in getting this Day past second reading in the Ontario legislature, with full support of all three parties. At the time Helena Jasic, the assistant to the Minister of Health Promotion, spearheaded our efforts. But then the holidays came, Helena took a different posting, and the ball got dropped.
I’m hoping that you might take up this worthy cause. It is part of a larger international campaign and it has already been successful in Toronto and many other areas around the world.
Raising awareness about CHD will help patients live longer, healthier lives. For more info please go to the Canadian Congenital Heart Alliance website at www.cchaforlife.org.
Yours sincerely __________”
